Community Corner

Grand Rapids, Western Michigan, MI Community

As winter slowly gives way to spring, Grand Rapids comes alive with exciting activities and opportunities to connect with the community. If you’re searching for ways to enjoy the month, there are plenty of local events in March that are perfect for families, friends, and anyone looking to explore what the city has to offer. From interactive exhibitions to laugh-out-loud performances, March is full of energy, learning, and fun.

Fred & Dorothy Fichter Butterflies Are Blooming

One of the most anticipated attractions this March is the Fred & Dorothy Fichter Butterflies Are Blooming exhibition at Frederik Meijer Gardens & Sculpture Park. Running from March 1, 2026, to April 30, 2026, this exhibition is the largest temporary tropical butterfly event in the nation. Visitors can experience more than 60 butterfly species from Africa, Asia, and Central and South America as they flutter freely through the five-story Lena Meijer Tropical Conservatory.

This exhibition offers a unique chance to observe these colorful creatures up close. There are feeding stations with nectar plants to see butterflies in detail, and an Observation Station where hundreds of butterflies and moths emerge from their chrysalides each week. For those who want to learn more, special educational programs allow visitors to design their own butterfly gardens, create butterfly-inspired art, and explore the science behind these fascinating insects.

The outdoor Lena Meijer Children’s Garden also features interactive butterfly-themed activities, making it a great destination for families. And while you’re there, don’t miss the other highlights of the gardens. Recognized as America’s number one sculpture park, the Meijer Gardens offers over 200 sculptures among beautiful gardens. Indoor gardens, including a carnivorous plant house and English perennial garden, provide additional opportunities for exploration regardless of the weather.

Planning your visit is simple. The gardens are just a short 12-16 minute drive from downtown Grand Rapids, with plenty of free parking. Tickets can be reserved online to skip long lines, and the exhibition is fully accessible for strollers and wheelchairs. Be sure to enjoy a meal or snack at the on-site James & Shirley Balk Café during your visit.

LaughFest 2026

Another highlight among March community events is LaughFest 2026, running from March 11 to March 15, 2026. This festival celebrates laughter with stand-up, improv, and other comedy events hosted at various locations throughout Grand Rapids. Presented by Gun Lake Casino and Resort, LaughFest raises awareness for Gilda’s Club Grand Rapids’ cancer and grief support programs while offering the community a chance to enjoy humor and connection.

Whether you’re a fan of live comedy or looking for a fun way to support a great cause, LaughFest provides plenty of laughs and memorable experiences. The festival brings people together and fosters a sense of community, making it a highlight of the March lineup of local events.

Many local businesses and venues in Grand Rapids offer local promotions during March. From special admission discounts to seasonal menus and themed activities, these promotions make it easy to enjoy more of what the city has to offer while saving money.
