Community Corner

Whether you want to learn a creative skill, improve your wellness routine, or discover activities to share with family and friends, the city offers countless ways to make this season memorable.

Shape Something Beautiful With Your Hands

Working with clay provides a calming escape from winter’s chill. The Mud Room at Knapp’s Corner welcomes everyone from first-timers to experienced artists for pottery painting, potter’s wheel sessions, and glass fusing projects. The studio’s friendly staff guides you through each creative step, making it easy to craft something you’ll treasure.

Woodworking offers another satisfying way to spend cold afternoons. Woodcraft Grand Rapids teaches 18 different woodworking classes each month for all skill levels. Their instructors help you learn proper techniques while working with over 90 types of wood, from small crafts to furniture pieces. Spruced Studio also hosts upscale workshops where you can create handmade items in a relaxing setting.

Keep Your Body Moving and Mind Clear

Staying active during winter helps maintain energy and mood. The City of Grand Rapids Parks and Recreation Department expanded its fitness program with over 40 affordable classes this season. Choose from line dancing, rowing, Zumba, cycling, water aerobics, barre, Pilates, and specialty sessions like Fireside Yoga. All classes welcome people of every ability at the new Scribner Avenue facility.

The Light on Yoga Institute in Forest Hills teaches Iyengar yoga for students of all ages and fitness levels. Both online and in-person options make it simple to build a regular practice this winter.

Discover New Worlds Through Reading

Grand Rapids Public Library branches host free programs throughout the season. Book clubs focused on science fiction, cozy mysteries, and popular reads connect you with fellow readers while exploring different genres. Crafternoons at Madison Square invite you to bring your own project or use provided supplies while meeting neighbors over coffee and cookies. The library also offers basic computer skills classes for anyone wanting to grow more comfortable with technology.
