Whether you’re searching for free family activities, unique art experiences, or exciting entertainment, this month’s calendar is packed with reasons to bundle up and celebrate the season.

America’s Largest Free Winter Festival Starts This Thursday

The World of Winter Festival kicks off this Thursday, January 9, running through March 1, 2026. This massive celebration features over 60 interactive art installations spread throughout downtown Grand Rapids, creating an easy walking tour through illuminated sculptures and light displays. Every single event is completely free to attend. Art installations glow daily from 8 am to 11 pm, with light-based pieces coming alive after dark for the most magical viewing experience.

Opening Weekend Events You Can’t Miss

Launch into the festival with the Fire & Ice street party this Saturday, January 10, where you’ll watch skilled ice carvers create stunning sculptures right before your eyes while fire dancers and figure skaters light up Rosa Parks Circle. The same day features the Ice Breaker carving demonstration and artist talks that dive deep into the creative process behind the festival’s installations.

Food lovers should plan for Jalsa: Festivity of Indian Food & Culture on Sunday, January 11, bringing authentic flavors and cultural experiences to downtown. Throughout the month, local food trucks rotate through the festival every Friday night, offering everything from gourmet comfort food to international cuisine.

If you prefer slower-paced activities, join a Sound Bath and Meditation session on January 16 in Ah-Nab-Awen Park, where calming sounds help you relax and recharge.

Party seekers should mark January 17 for the Silent Disco at Calder Plaza. Dance under the stars with wireless headphones, choosing your own music channel while surrounded by stunning art installations.
